Curly Grrlz Hip Clipz Artist Search-The AndWutz in Boston

So we decided it was time to take a trip to Boston, Massachusetts to finally award The AndWutz their swag. You remember, they won the CGz Hip Clipz Artist Search we did. So we hooked-up with them in Boston and gave them their skateboard (they chose the Retro Grrl), their guitars from Daisy Rock Girl Guitars, Vans shoes, Anarchy Eyewear sunglasses and stuff. To celebrate our 6th Anniversary we've decided to redo the website...That's right...We're in the process of redesigning our website. It's changed a couple times in the past 6 years and we've added to our line of awesome skateboards...The new site will be different but it'll still have that Curly Grrlz feel. Blackheart Records just auctioned a Joan Jett autographed Blackheart Records/Curly Grrlz Skateboards custom deck on Ebay. The custom board was autographed by Joan and featured the caption, "Rock Till You Drop...Joan Jett". The board was created by Curly Grrlz and decorated with Blackheart Records logo featuring the Blackheart pinup girl and the Curly Grrlz Skateboards logo all on a Tattoo Grrl skatedeck. 10% of the proceeds of the auction went to benefit the MusiCares Foundation.

Phantom Planet Encore Rerformance

When we first started the Curly Grrlz Hip Clipz Artist of the Month, the very first band we featured was California based Phantom Planet. We dug their music, caught their show at the Knitting Factory in NYC and wanted all those checking-out www.curlygrrlz.com to enjoy their tunes. Fast forward a couple of years and a huge number of awesome acts and we're doing it again. Ok, so we've been working on a bunch of stuff since Christmas. Which, by the way was awesome! We're in the process of re-plentishing our suppy but we want to start-off 2008, our 6th year, by welcoming all the girls that scored a totally awesome Curly Grrlz Skateboard this year.

Just to let you know...We're working on two brand spankin' new boards for 2008. We can't give you any info on them just yet, cause most of the stuff is still on the drawing boards but you can bet that they'll follow the Curly Grrlz tradition of being something totally different. You guys know that Curly Grrlz has the largest selection of skateboards for girls in the universe and we're gonna keep that going.

Oh ya, we started this Hip Clipz thing a couple of years ago to showcase some excellent music acts while you check out our stuff. Well you guys know we've had some awesome bands that became mega-artists showcase their tunes on http://www.curlygrrlz.com/. And the Hip Clipz tradition continues...We're stoked to add The Donnas to the line-up in March and we just hooked-up with the legendary girl-group The Bangles for April!!! They're totally retro!

Well as you can see we've been workin' pretty hard, so keep checking back and let us know how we're doing!

Congratulations to The AndWutz. Hip Clipz Artist search winner!The AndWutz are an all female four-piece band based in Waltham, Massachusetts. With no prior musical experience, the girls formed the band originally as a joke with the intentions of shooting a fake music video to laugh at. But since they wanted to make it look like they knew what they were doing...they attempted to actually play.... Only 5 months later, they were literally forced to start playing shows by their friends in other bands.... Since then, they have played with a long list of talented bands including; The Queers, Waltham and Seemless & at all the hottest venues in Boston; The Paradise, The Middle East and Harper's Ferry as well as the legendary CBGB's in NY.

Well, the votes are in...We have a winner...

For the past several years we've been featuring a cool band on our website each month...Some we've left on a bit longer. We've featured bands like; Plain White Ts, Paramore, Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, Phantom Planet, Cyndi Lauper, The Veronicas, Everybody Else, Days Away, Tsunami Bomb, Gym Class Dropouts, MINK, Saving Jane, Pretty in Stereo, The Breakup...(Sorry if we left your band out)

In July we decided to find a cool indie girl act (or band with a girl front) to showcase. We partnered-up with GoGirls Music (the authority on indie girl acts), and found a bunch of sponsors like Daisy Rock, Pretty Tough, Play Like A Girl Sports, Switchring, Anarchy/Angel Eyewear, Sonicbids, Girls Rock Radio and Vans and ran a contest. Demo-ology hooked-us-up with some awesome web wizidry and The Cover Zone provided us with a website and vote tabulation.

The voting ran from December 1-31, 2007 and we received thousands of votes...

We'll the results are in and we have a winner....The AndWutz!

Whew! We made it through the Christmas (ran out of a bunch of stuff) and now onto a brand new spankin year...2008!

We would like to welcome all the girls around the world that woke-up on Christmas morning to a brand new shiny Curly Grrlz Skateboard. We'd also like to welcome those girls that made 2007, our 5th year, a totally awesome year. Curly Grrlz Skateboards can now be seen all over the USA and in Australia, Japan, the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Netherlands...You name it!

As you know, we're a small, independent girl's skateboard company that exists because of you guys...Our skateboards (second to none we might add) and your awesome word of mouth have continued to help us grow...We're now in our 6th year!!!

Curly Grrlz Skateboards Launches New Decks

Curly Grrlz Skateboards previewed two new decks at the Surf Expo. The new decks will hit the site in late October or early November.

When it comes to picking colors, the way we see it, there are two kinda girls: pink girls and purple girls. Some girls love pink and some girls love purple. So we thought, "We make a camo skateboard for pink girls so why not make one for purple girls?" So here she is, the Purple Camo Grrl! The Purple Camo Grrl complete sports a Purple Camo Grrl deck: size: 7.375 x 31.5, matching Tracker Trucks especially painted for Curly Grrlz by Tracker, Bombshellz Skateboard Wheelz with Tracker Abec 5 bearings, hardware and signal green grip tape. She's unbelievable!!

Second, a couple of month ago, we hooked-up with LA based band The Dollyrots and made a one of a kind Curly Grrlz/Dollyrots board with the band's logo on the top...The Dollyrots had a contest and gave it away to one lucky winner and were blown away by the response. So we teamed-up with the them again and made a limited number of Pink and Purple Camo Grrl decks with their logo on the top. So here's the 411 on the boards: Complete Curly Grrlz/Dollyrots Camo Grrl board consists of Pink or Purple Camo Grrlz deck: size: 7.375 x 31.5, matching Tracker Trucks especially painted for Curly Grrlz by Tracker, Bombshellz Skateboard Wheelz with Tracker Abec 5 bearings, hardware and clear grip tape revealing the Dollyrots logo on top. Curly Grrlz at The Surf Expo

As you guys are aware, we packed up the shop and shot down to Orlando, Florida to hang-out with a bunch of skate, surf and other companies at the Surf Expo. Needless to say, we're back and exhausted! Setting-up across from Zoo York, Skull Candy and Nike our first day was awesome as we were visited by the rock group MINK. Fresh from a show at the House of Blues, MINK came by to check out our stuff and the custom board we designed for them. We drank way too many energy drinks, listened to tons of music and showed off our boards and stuff to everyone...Again, Curly Grrlz was the only girl skateboard company in attendance. Tony Redington, editor of FTK skate magazine stopped by along with a bunch of our friends. Curly Grrz will be introducing at least one new design in the coming weeks and some new accessories including Slip Tape.

Curly Grrlz/Go Girls Music Hip Clipz Artist Search

As you guys are aware Curly Grrlz has hosted some excellent groups on our Hip Clipz. Bands like: Paramore, Fall Out Boy, Plain White Ts, MINK, Saving Jane, Panic At The Disco, Tsunami Bomb, The Dollyrots, Phantom Planet, Cyndi Lauper, The Veronicas and so on and so on!

In August, Curly Grrlz partnered-up with Go Girls Music to search for the next up-and-coming girl or girl fronted band. We were joined by a bunch of sponsors including Daisy Rock Girl Guitars.

Entry submissions ended on August 31st and now we're in the process of picking 20 bands from the list to be featured on Demo-ology.

Surf Expo 2007

It's that time again when we pack up the place and make our annual trip to the Surf Expo in Orlando, Florida where we'll be premiering and showcasing our latest designs. This year we'll be showing off all the custom work we've done with The Dollyrots, Daisy Rock Girl Guitars, Blackheart Records, Saving Jane and MINK. As a matter of fact, MINK will be making a special appearance at the Curly Grrlz booth!!!

Curly Grrlz and Daisy Rock colaborated on a custom skateboard for the X-Games in LA. The custom deck sported Daisy Rock Guitars and Curly Grrlz Logos on a Curly Grrlz Tatttoo Grrl and Camo Grrl deck.

Curly Grrlz 38" Pink Island Grrl Longboard Revealed

Curly Grrlz introduces our second longboard, the 38" Island Grrl. Made available in May, the new Island Grrl is a bit shorter than the 48", she sports a kicktail and has a bit more flex than the 48". She has an awesome pink hibiscus design and completes sport, riser pads and as always, trucks by our friends at Tracker. Oh ya and 65 mm wheels.

We'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who made 2006 such an awesome year at Curly Grrlz with a special shout out to the jolly, fat, guy in red! We'd also like to welcome all the new girls to the Street Team, to the Forum and to those of you who got your first Curly Grrlz Skateboard.

This year saw two brand new decks and our very first Longboard. It would be difficult to list all the great things that happened spring to fall in 2006, but we can say it was awesome. Especially after solidifying a great working relationship with Santa this year, we were able to see to it that the elves packed a record number of Curly Grrlz skateboards into the Nick's (as he is known around the workshop) sleigh so he could deliver them to all the good grrlz on his list. While we are stoked about 2006, just wait to see what we have in store for 2007...Our 5th Anniversary.

Curly Grrlz Longboard

We thought we'd give you a sneak peak of the first Curly Grrlz Longboard since she just returned her photo shoot.

It took us a little over a year but the wait was worth it!

We spoke with a bunch of girls; beginners, novice and pros. We lugged around our prototype. (We rode it a bit too) We took their advice on length (48" length and a little over 10" at it's widest), medium flex and design (cut outs and risers to avoid wheel bite, etc.) and then added our two cents. Black and white hibiscus design on natural wood. The boards were then made in the United States. She's awesome!
Longboard completes have brushed Tracker Trucks (again Made in the US) Tracker Abec 5 bearings, Jessup Grip and clear red, clear green or milky white wheels.

Keep your eyes out cause they'll be up and available at www.curlygrrlz.com very shortly...We promise!!!

Surf Expo Previews

We're heading off to Orlando, Florida next week for the Surf Expo. If you've never been to one, or you've never heard of it...It's the hugest display of Surf, Skate , Wake, Clothes you've ever seen! We're gonna set up our booth in the middle of these gigantic companies like, Roxy, Volcom, NIKE,...You name'm they are there!!!

So here's the big news...We're previewing two brand new smokin' designs...actually three... because one is our very first CURLY GRRLZ LONGBOARD...We've been working on this for over a year and now its almost here...It'll be available when we return and we get some cool pics for you to check out.

In the meantime check out our newest add in FTK Skate Mag for a sneak at the graphics (Although they're not black and white).

We'll let you know how the expo goes since we're the only girls skate company there!

September 15, 16 and 17th Curly Grrlz will be camped out at the Surf Expo in Orlando, Florida. This year we'll be making our temporary home at the Orlando Convention Center in booth #680 right across from Sector 9 and NIKE.

Skateboarders at University of Virginia in Charlottesville Get New Shop

Andy Foster has just opended a new shop, The Black Cat Skateshop located at 1325 A West Main Street in Charlottesville, Virginia. The store specializes in custom made T-shirts, skateboards and skating gear. Andy, who has been planning the store since last August, said his store fits into "a niche in Charlottesville that needed to be filled." National Go Skateboarding Day Festival

There is a contest for males and females at the Denver Skatepark. They're expecting over 500 people at the event and hopefully lots and lots more! So spread the word! Whew!!! You should be receiving (or should have received) the latest installment of the official Curly Grrlz Skateboards Newsletter...We are blown away by the number of girls that have joined the Street Team! You guys are telling your friends and spreading the word about Curly Grrlz and girl's skateboarding. Curly Grrlz now has street team members in virtually every state in the US including Puerto Rico and a bunch more around the world.

We do want to thank some of our friends (in music, beverage, shoes, sunglasses) who support the Street Team and sent us cool stickers and stuff for the Swag Squad to stuff in the envelopes...Oh ya and sorry to all the postal delivery people who had to schlep all that mail.

Graffiti Skate Zone has announced the 2006 Skate Camp schedule. Owner, Dan Hatcher told us that the camp has sold out every year for the past 3 years and will most likely sell out again. The skateboard school in Colorado doesn’t discriminate against anyone! Laura Mainiero, being a female herself, is all about teaching girls how to skate. She started skating when she was 14 and had no one to help her. So she understands how lonely it can be when you’re a female in a male-dominated sport.
Throughout her years teaching and learning, she has come to the conclusion that most girls learn a bit differently than boys. Girls tend to need things broken down into smaller steps, where as boys have that "NO FEAR" attitude. Girls tend to analyze the cause and effects.
No matter what you're interested in learning, she'll work with you to help you meet your goals.

Comp by Dacure at Splinter Skatepark

‘Comp by Dacure’ at Splinter Skate Park was a great success on Saturday, Dec 10th. Everything ran smoothly and the turn out was better than expected. At a conservative estimate 300-400 people showed up through out the whole day and all the seating was full. Lots of free stuff was given away with a raffle, trick completions and a product toss at the end of the day.

Wicked Wahine Weekend

The Wicked Ride Weekend is quickly approaching. Tylenol is the title sponsor with a $6500 total prize purse for the Pro/Am division for both Bowl and Street. They'll be awarding the top 5 and not to forget the Best Trick. Beginners and Intermediates will also compete for some awesome prizes from a bunch of companies supporting girl's skateboarding including Curly Grrlz!

The schedule is pretty tight and may vary depending on the number of skaters. Make sure you show up no less then 1/2 hour before your division time.

So this is the story...We jumped in the Jeep and shot down to the Knitting Factory in NYC. There were three bands scheduled to play: The Plain White Ts, Theacademyis and Days Away. The Andy Kessler fundraiser...The Whole Story

We first met Andy Kessler during the Riverside Skate Jam organizational meetings in 2004 and maintained contact into 2005 during the filming of the up-and-coming indie-film, Chronicles of a Skater Girl. Andy acted as consultant and has a cameo appearance in the flick. So when we discovered that Andy had broke himself while skating and we learned that a fund raiser was scheduled, we had to be there!

We traveled to Brooklyn, NY from Connecticut with nothing more than a couple of cross streets in a town called Greenport looking for a place called the Autumn Bowl. We figured we could find the place, after all it was NY. Winding our way through narrow, crowded streets we made several inquiries to passing residents. Although we new we were close no one seemed to know what we were talking about. As we found ourselves in the midst of what appeared to be abandoned mills with dark unlit alleyways, as chance would have it, we noticed the address precariously perched high atop one of the looming brick buildings. We parked the car and ventured down the unlit alleyway. In the complete darkness we recognized the sound of skateboards and music. We continued onward and as we approached what appeared to be an open doorway we discovered it was the entrance to the Autumn Bowl. Once inside we were amazed. The park was packed with skaters and spectators alike, lining the large bowl watching in amazement as live bands and disc jockeys filed the building with pounding music. Sitting high atop the bowl with crutches in hand we caught site of Andy. A couple of girls made their way through the crowd with a birthday cake with candles blazing singing Happy Birthday. The park stood still and joined in. Andy grabbed a bite of the cake and the skating resumed.

A little while later Andy meandered down the steps on his crutches, joining us on the ground floor, exchanging pleasantries. We spoke briefly, gave him a hug and wished him the best. The crowd seemed to be building as skaters and friends walked in and out of the pitch black alleyway hugging the ailing skater. The entrance to the bowl was full of activity as the grill blazed with hamburgers and Red Stripe beer was abundant. Shirts were being sold to raise funds for the effort. A sign behind the table said, “Shirts…$15 good…$20.00 better.”

The highpoint of the night came, when for some unknown reason, the bowl went completely black. All the lights went out. Nevertheless, there was no screaming, no widespread panic and as a matter of fact there appeared to be little or no concern whatsoever. Skaters continued to skate as if they had memorized each inch of the giant bowl. The band broke into a somber rhythmic tune and spectators lining the bowl broke out lighters dimly illuminating the bowl. The skating continued uninterrupted.

We hung around beyond the time the flyer indicated the fundraiser would end as the end was nowhere in sight and we had to get back.

We ventured back into the pitch black alleyway being passed by more skaters arriving, carrying their skateboards. It was an awesome experience. Unfortunately, although we’d like to tell you where the bowl is located, the guys who skate the Autumn Bowl pledge that, “If you don’t know where it is you don’t belong there!” We’ll respect their wishes.

OK, I'll admit it-I'm a "wanna be". I just spent two days with the girls from Patty Segovia's All Girl Skate Jam and I'm hooked.

Wednesday I dropped in on the AGSJ Surf and Skate Camp. The Oceanside, California beach house was full of everything skate. There were decks, pads and helmets everywhere. The girls were just finishing up a mad game of duck duck goose on the beach and were on their way to the Oceanside Skate Park. They put on all their gear and hit the ramps. They were fearless. They were all ages, all abilities and all styles, some just starting out and others like-14-year-old pro, April Woodcock. Some liked to street skate, grinding on the rails-and others liked dropping into the ramps.

Then it was off to Tony Alva's skate shop. Tony was there and we got a tour of the shop and autographs-the girls were stoked, Tony was super nice and I bought my first deck. Then it was off to the Encinitas YMCA skate park for some shredding. The Encinitas park was amazing! Two pools, giant vert ramps and full of really amazing skaters. The girls jumped right in and continued to sharpen their skills while some pros like Buster Halterman and snowboarder/skater Shawn White made the giant vert look so easy it was ridiculous.

The next day was the main event-The All Girl Skate Jam at the Coors Amphitheater in San Diego. The AGSJ, in it's 8th year was hooked-up with the Van's Warped Tour and the mini ramp was set-up right inside the venue. There were three amateur heats and a pro jam. The girls tore the mini ramp up all day while the Warped bands played in the background. The competition was tight and after a very long deliberation and a skate off, Nugget won 1st place in the amateur division. Apryl Woodcock won the pro-jam and Curly Grrlz rider, Lea Taylor took first place for the groms. It was amazing to see these girls ride in person. So much style and athletic talent. What impressed me the most about the day were the groms. Little five-year-old Alize Montes was shredding so hard that even large men with mow-hawks stopped to watch.

The future looks very bright for women's skating. It's good to be a girl.

Andy Kessler Fund Raiser/Birthday Bash

So we trecked down to Brooklyn, NY on Saturday night, July 11th, to support Andy Kessler who broke himself skating recently. (And wish him a happy birthday.) The event was held at the Autumn Bowl and as the place proudly professes..."If you don't know where it is, you don't belong there!" (And if you don't know where it is, you won't find it!)

Live bands and DJs, raw skating, food, etc...It was awesome!!! Oh ya, and Andy is gonna be OK..

We'll follow up with a full report and pics (if they came out) shortly, but until then, we thought you'd like to know...

We do what we can to spread the word about Curly Grrlz Skateboards and girl's skateboarding...However, unlike some of the huge guy companies with gagillion dollar budgets we rely on you guys to help us out...If you join the Street Team we'll send you some stickers and stuff to show your support and we'll mail you updates and our Street Team Newsletter. The newsletter that keeps you informed about cool things in girl's skateboarding...We need your help!
